Review:
The phenomenal "saxsual" escapades of Jeanette Harris have been blowing the minds of jazz connoisseurs and novices at various locations throughout the United States. With a sound that cuts like a hot knife through butter, Jeanette's strength lies in her musical ability and agility. Riding this wave of popularity and on that of her latest CD entitled Down Route 99, this lady is fast becoming a rising star in a genre pre-dated by male artists.

Down Route 99 is the culmination of much ado about everything. As a graduate of Berklee School of Music and the product of a musical family, Jeanette's devotion to the saxophone began at age six. Her loyalty to the instrument was so prevalent, she would constantly play the horn whenever time would permit. Her passion for the horn was so pervasive, it also consumed her spare time as well. Since those humble beginnings coupled with structured study and numerous other performing opportunities, Jeanette Harris has evolved into a very fine musician.

In a genre dominated by male artists, Jeanette Harris' sound rises above the pack with an established presence. Having witnessed her phenomenal presence first hand in a live setting, I can only say that Down Route 99 adds even more credence to what is most assuredly recognized as a viable entry into the smooth jazz arena. With fourteen tracks of original compositions and a cover of Stevie Wonder's recording Overjoyed," Jeanette Harris creates a mesmerizing presence musically. Her musical voice is intimate and personal in approach as she provides a clarity of sound with a strong sense of purpose. Throughout the entire CD, her forays into the known world of smooth jazz are both picturesque and adventuresome. Her disciplined approach to the saxophone as well as those of the band is very evident. With strategically placed musical dynamics, all involved with Down Route 99 has definitely made this smooth jazz offering worth listening to. If Jeanette Harris has not crossed your musical pathway as of yet, stay tuned, for she is sure to be an integral part of the overall scene in the not too distant future. ~ Sheldon T. Nunn
